To Those Who Refer to Ms Susan Boyle As Frumpy
In the New York Daily News today, December 1, 2009, a male writer referred to Ms. Susan Boyle with such words as "frumpy" and "unglamorous." To say I am offended is an understatement.
Susan Boyle has the most angelic voice I have ever heard and from the enormous fanfare she received after singing on a hit TV show, it is clear that others feel the say way. Why is she constantly being referred to as "frumpy?" While most of the writers who use this adjective are men, there have been some women reporters and TV hosts who have been unkind in their description of her. The word "frumpy" is as archaic as the writers who use the word, and just as insulting.
Why is it that when it comes to women singers, actresses, and other professional women, there is a tendency to categorize them according to their looks and not their talent? As amazing as Susan Boyle is, it seems apparent she still does not measure up to the "ideal" woman in the eyes of some critics.
Susan Boyle is a woman first and foremost, and she commands the same respect that all women deserve. She is a singer second, whose voice enters your heart, mind, and soul offering a melodious retreat to a place you may have forgotten from long ago.
Yet when I read about her in the newspapers or hear reports on TV, she is demeaned in such a way that it actually hurts my heart. I cringe and I become angry that a beautiful woman such as Susan Boyle is held to a different standard.
Do we judge men in the same way? I think not. I do not know what kind of mentality allows certain individuals to dismiss a talented individual with righteous indignation. Do writers refer to male singers in a disparaging manner? They would not dare. Yet, it is okay to do so when it involves women. Have we lost all decency?
I find it a sad commentary for those who continue to categorize women in general, and Susan Boyle in particular, based on what they believe the ideal woman should be. Their references are skewered; their conclusions false; and their comments are most likely born out of a childhood in which name-calling and labeling others was the norm.
To those who refer to Ms. Susan Boyle as "frumpy," you owe her an apology. She deserves nothing less.
